Crown Heights Townhouse

Design Brief:

Home to a young family with two sons, the project balances playfulness with order—recognizing that joy and regulation are not opposites, but partners. The architecture supports both energy and focus, creating a house that can flex with imagination while remaining grounded and soothing.

At its heart is a playful home gym tailored to support ADHD needs—not as a designated “therapy space,” but as an integrated part of daily life. It encourages movement, sensory regulation, and creative play. One son builds sets and elaborate storefront scenes, transforming corners of the house into miniature worlds; the home meets him there, offering durable surfaces, adaptable zones, and places where making a mess is part of the process, not a problem.

The other anchor of the home is a deep love of books and knowledge. A modern-day librarian by nature, the mother’s influence is felt in the layered storage strategies, reading nooks, and quiet moments throughout the house. Books are not hidden away—they are woven into circulation paths and everyday rooms, reinforcing learning as something lived, not scheduled.

Color is used intentionally: joyful, confident, and never chaotic. A palette of soft greens, blues, and warm neutrals creates visual interest while maintaining cohesion. These hues are paired with highly durable materials—chosen to withstand wear, movement, and growth without sacrificing beauty. The result is a home that feels alive, not precious.

Clarity of flow was paramount. Circulation is intuitive, sightlines are clean, and storage is purposeful and generous. Toys, books, gym equipment, and creative tools all have a place, reducing visual noise and supporting a sense of calm. The house works quietly in the background, holding structure so the family doesn’t have to.

This is a home designed for real life: imaginative, active, book-filled, and deeply human. A place where color sparks joy, movement supports focus, and thoughtful organization creates the conditions for both play and peace to coexist.
